Dollar for dollar you're probably going to get more processing power out of building a pc. Really it comes down to how good your computer hardware and your soundcard is.

I'm sure that with time, Steinberg, E-Magic, MOTU, Ableton, etc would have gravitated towards a music-centric computer/OS rather than OS X and Windows, and by today we'd have a solid, singular, well-established Linux-based music-and-audio OS that began as a Pro Tools-only environment but would've evolved to a more open standard, much like MIDI or the VST protocol. It would've solidified Pro Tools as the industry standard, relieved them of the burden of supporting two OS's (though, let's be real, they hardly support Windows), given them complete control from the motherboard to the software, and up until the project studio revolution about a decade ago, the pro market would've had no choice but to accept it. But they didn't use that walled-garden approach to create "Pro Tools OS" (which would have been Linux-based). I've always said that Digidesign/Avid (depending on the timeline) missed the boat-they locked consumers down to specific and expensive hardware, which for a long time consumers were willing to deal with. I'd love to see it happen but the Catch-22 is rough-no support means no users adopt it, and lack of user base means no support.

Their Windows drivers are legendary-ridiculously low latency and zero issues ever-and their hardware is top notch. They need stability more than anything, and in my experience Windows has been great.Īs a side-note, I suggest you use an RME interface if you switch. They wouldn't switch if there were stability concerns, as film composers tend to have the most ridiculous deadlines in the world. one master Mac and multiple Windows slaves). I'm a pro composer and tech and can tell you that many of the bigger composers I do tech for are switching to Windows as well, or are at least utilizing it more (i.e.

Windows is rock-solid, given that you known how to care for a system (same with Macs) and use good components for your build. I've had roughly the same number of issues on both platforms, and the issues have always been few and far between.
